Anybody in the UK or Ireland who needs children's books with both braille and print text is welcome to join the ClearVision library. The books are sent directly to your address and there is no postage to pay. Membership is free to families (though we'd love it if you're able to make a donation); organisations such as schools, libraries and Sensory Support Services pay an annual fee of £60 - a tiny proportion of the cost of providing a loan, subsidised by our fundraising. To join, complete the form below.
Family loans: these are for children who are learning braille or may someday, or who need board books with tactile elements, to enjoy at home. They're also for braille-reading adults who want to share books with sighted friends, family or with children at their local school or library. We will send you six books. You can change three at a time, as often as you like, so you always have three books at home to read whilst others are being changed. We know people read at different rates, and that some children love to read the same book again and again, so there are no “late” fees, and you can keep the books for up to six months.
Nurseries, schools and Sensory Support/Visual Impairment services: You can borrow books for children learning to read/explore by touch (braille or Moon, or using tactile books) but also for sighted children to take home and read with braille-reading parents. You have 20 “units” of loan per subscription, which can be made up of different types of books. A story/non-fiction book is 1 unit, a short chapter book for newly-fluent readers is 2 units and a tactile book 4 units. You could borrow a single type of book e.g. 20 picture books or a mixture e.g.10 picture books and 5 short chapter books. Children reading at a similar level can share a loan, or you can take out a loan per child, or per member of staff. You can change your books up to six times a year and you can keep them for up to six months. If you would like to borrow tactile books as part (or all) of your loan, you’ll also need to complete a tactile book form.
Public libraries: can borrow collections of books from us to lend out on a local basis, meaning that braille-reading library users can walk in and choose books from the shelf, just as their sighted family and peers do. This is a great way to provide your borrowers with a large, frequently-changing collection of braille books at low cost.
